Memories of Douglas Lloyd

Doug was my running partner on the Cross Country and track team. We always ran our workouts together. He was always good to this skinny kid that could be a little hard on peoples nerves. He introduced me to his friends from his Jr Hi School and they ended up beings my best buds in school. We use to meet at the armory on Friday nights, and went to the sporting events together. I have just found out about his passing from the website. I had hoped to see him at the reunion. This is really hard for me as I will always remember him.

This one would make Doug laugh. A bunch of of us were hanging out at the beach, skim boards were the hot thing and we were creating new shapes and trying new tricks with them. Doug comes running up the beach, throws his down and sliding up to us while we notice his is shooting a rooster tailof water up behind him. None of us had ever seen a board do that, so we are anxious to see what he has created. As he gets closer we see that he's riding a yield sign. Note: Street signs in those days were 3/8 plywood which made it the perfect thickness and weight. Doug lets us try it out and it works great. The shape and size was ideal. Doug notices that my board is getting thin and warn so he volunteers to help me get a sign for a new board. I knew where a sign was not far away, so off we go. He parked his VW on the next block and checked out the corner where the sign is. Quiet neighborhood all clear. Got the bottom bolt off but I had to get on Doug’s shoulders to get the top one. It's almost off and I'm looking past the sign up the street and a cop car is coming. I’m yelling for Doug to let me down and he's not seeing the cop car yet. Finally Doug makes the connection and the race was on. We're running through yards jumping hedges, what ever it took to keep from getting caught. Both of us were on the track team so this was good sport. We ended up running all the way back to the beach before going back after his VW. I'll say Doug was the fastest that day and we did get that sign the next day. Those were fun times. Doug was a carefree gentle soul. I’ll bet his spirit is still at that beach skimming the surf. Rest in peace old friend.
