Sam Hammond Memorial Award |
|
| |
The first-ever Sam Hammond Scholarship Award was
presented to three deserving recipients this past
May 20th at an awards ceremony held in the
auditorium of our old Alma Mater. Kathy
Pierce-Haines was there to make the presentation on
behalf of the class of '67.
The idea for the award was conceived at the 40th
Reunion when memories of Sam and his unfortunate
circumstance were recalled. It has since become a
reality thanks to the efforts (and donations) of our
class members.
The award was
established in memory of our classmate Sam Hammond
who was killed by police during a peaceful
demonstration in Orangeburg, South Carolina on
February 8, 1968. |
